brennan, the headline of "the national journal" says john brennan shows hagel how it's done. we had another drone attack today. seven people killed in pakistan. an area outside of pakistan. none are civilians according to u.s. officials. nevertheless, the dynamic there, the clearing of the chamber and some of the tough questions from democrats to brennan, how do you measure his performance yesterday and the answers he gave? >> you know, i think a frustration was built around mostly the cia and the really hostile relationship between congress and the agency over the years and what lawmakers feel is the agency's failure to brief them adequately on a lot of secret operation that is are happening overseas. i think brennan is generally safe. he did perform satisfactory according to a lot of these -- the key democrats an some of the republicans on the panel and will get confirmed. i think that will happen in the next couple of weeks but look for the issue of the drone strikes and whether or not there needs to be more oversight to become a hot issue in the next weeks. >> senator bob menend
today. the hearings today. panetta talking about the giant screw-up in benghazi, libya and brennan explaining the killer drone, does he want to be the next cia director. and let's talk benghazi first, did you learn anything? >> well, one thing that was interesting i thought from the panetta testimony is when general dempsey, he testified with leon panetta chairman of the joint chiefs and he said he was surprised when he was pressed that hillary clinton didn't read that all important august 15th cable, right, where chris stevens said, we aren't going to be able to repel and attack in benghazi with what we have. and he was pressed on that. are you surprised she didn't see he it, well, yeah, i was surprised. it looked like there was buck passing from panetta and dempsey to the state department because they said people are wondering why we didn't have armed aircraft in the vicinity, well, we didn't have enough time, and essentially saying the state department didn't request it. so, it all seems like, you know, fingers are pointing in the other direction. >> bill: here is what i think.

brennan, the architect of this policy during his confirmation hearings for cia director, and that's coming up tomorrow. do you think that this is going to have a big impact, a lot of questions during that confirmation directly on this? >> brennan was put on the grill before over the so called torture memos. he's a career cia officer. he's a magnificent public servant. he's extremely knowledgeable. i'm sure he will be questioned closely about all this. and that's appropriate. having said that, he's not the architect of anything. this is a responsibility the commander in chief, the secretary of defense and the cia director. so that's who we ought to hold accountable. >> are drone strikes the future? >> well, all the other nations are now building drones. and so again, there's precedence here that we should be concerned about. because this sort of tool will be use against us in the coming decades. having said that, we've got to protect the american people. we have decimated al qaeda globally. it's astonishing how well we have done against a lot of these people. a lot of that was during a draw
